JOB TITLE: Public/School Joint-Use Library Intern
JOB DESCRIPTION: Franklin Community Library is one of the largest joint–use public/school facilities in California, serving high–school and middle–school students as well as the general public (NOTE: During the summer months, when school is not in session, the vast majority of our patrons are elementary-school kids and families). Interns will have the opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of public– and school–librarianship. You will develop valuable, transferable skills in working with children, teens, and adults in a variety of settings. 

We encourage our interns to choose the area(s) in which he or she would most like to gain experience (i.e., children's services, teen services, and/or adult services; reference duties, programming & event planning, marketing & web presence, and/or collection development & maintenance). Duties may include, but are not limited to:

* Assisting with the planning and possible administration of children's, teen, and/or adult programming (baby/toddler/preschool storytimes, video gaming programs, teen advisory group, manga club, etc.) 

* Writing haikus and library-related tweets for our twitter feed, @saclib_franklin

* Assisting in the selection of new children's books for the entire library system 

* Creating posters, flyers, displays, and web graphics to promote programs and books

* Providing reference and reader's advisory services 

* Giving bibliographic instruction and tours to visiting classes 

* Assisting library patrons with the computers and library catalog 

* Maintaining the library's existing collection (weeding old books and processing new ones) 

* Other projects as designed/proposed by the intern

TASK TYPE: Non-archival

WORK TO BE DONE: On Site
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have an interest in public librarianship.

SEMESTER(S): Summer 2010, Fall 2010
HOURS: Flexible.
PAID/UNPAID: Unpaid
