Exercise 4: Due March 13

This week's exercise will give you experience creating an instructional screencast.

1. Create a narrated screencast demonstrating for your classmates the use of one of your favorite social software sites (as if we'd never used it before). It should be approximately 2 - 4 minutes in length (don't worry about going over or under a little). Use one of the screencasting tools listed on our class page. You can get trial copies of many of the for-pay screencasting software options.

2. Upload your finished video to YouTube, blip.tv, or another video hosting site and provide a link to the screencast on the wiki under Exercise 4. If you use Captivate or Jing to create your screencast (or if you export your file as an .swf), you will probably need to host it at screencast.com (you can get a free account there) as it will not work with most hosting sites.

Grading based on the following:

  1. Student created a screencast (1 point)
  2. Screencast adhered to instructions (1 point)
  3. Student successfully uploaded screencast and posted it to the wiki (1 point)

Hi, Meredith,

Does our screencast need to be narrated, or can it just consist of a visual demonstration? Thanks in advance for your response!

Good question! Yes, I'd like

Good question! Yes, I'd like for it to be narrated and I ammended the exercise to reflect that.

Opps, sorry I just noticed

Opps, sorry I just noticed this about narration, I happened to go back here to see if I needed to comment on a screencast. I did not narrate because the mic jack on my desktop did not work or is perhaps head phone only since it only has a headphone symbol on it (I tried the mic any way but no go). I swear that I did not see that it had to be narrated when I read the assignment. Though I supose a loss of a point will not kill me : ).

Hi Carla. No worries. I

Hi Carla. No worries. I understand that tech snafus happen (to all of us) sometimes and it won't have a significant impact on your grade.

I have a question too, can we

I have a question too, can we demonstrate part of a social network site, say like, lists in twitter, or how to create a group in facebook, or how to use flickr organizr?  thx!

Absolutely! Any of those

Absolutely! Any of those would be terrific things to demonstrate. Really, it's more about using the screencasting software than about what specifically you're demonstrating.
