Digg-ing themselves out of rut?

For this week's resource I'm focusing on Digg.com.

And the crowd goes wild (or so some fear)

Years ago, more than 15 at least, I heard a comedian make fun of the phone book. In declaring its uselessness he recounted how when looking up "clothes" it read, "See apparel" and while the joke won't translate well here, his comment, "No one since 1890 has used the word apparel," produced a solid round of laughs.  And the phone is an example where some parts of a taxonomy did not have relevance for a user.

One of the resources I found while working on Exercise 6 was Google's newish social search feature which links a Google profile to your network. So if a friend of mine does a search for San Diego camping search results will include any of my related tags, blog posts, Flickr pictures, etc.. As usual I'm hesitant to apply this to my personal online-ness but the possibilities for libraries is for choc full o' potential.

Latecomer to the Social Bookmarking Party

While I have been a reluctant social network user it was not until this exercise that my insular approach to the Internet became apparent. I've thought about it terms of my bookmarks, my searches, my e-mail. I think I've even only ever clicked on one ad in Gmail because I figure they'll all be irrelevent spam. And while I'll share resources with any of my friends via e-mail maybe I've been reluctant to engage because I doubted the value of other people's input -- how elitist, I know!
