What do you see as the most promising idea(s) for libraries to pursue in providing virtual reference services and why?
Qwidget, a chat widget was released January 2008 as part of QuestionPoint (software used by AskNow). From the user end, the interface looks much like the Meebo's. One of the discussion topics for this week is the pros and cons of IM Reference vs. commercial virtual refence. This new tool combines 24/7 reference service with IM Reference, which can make it favorable among librarians and patrons alike.
Prior to this assignment, I've used both types of virtual reference technology and have an idea on what to expect from each service. AskNow and Meebo have different interfaces. AskNow is more like a chatroom while the Meebo interface is a widget on the library's page. It took a while to get a response from AskNow because I had to first fill out a form and and then wait for the system to connect and then wait for a librarian to pick up my question. The librarian was busy and mentioned that she was working with other patrons.
I used the AskNow and Libraries of the Claremont Colleges IM reference for this exercise. I was connected to the virtual reference librarians fairly quickly. For ASKNow, the system responded, telling me that a librarian would be with me shortly.
What do you think are the most important features any virtual reference service should have?
There are three things a virtual reference service should have to be effective.
The first is a good reference librarian. If you have a mediocre reference librarian, no matter what you else you have for virtual services will only be mediocre. Technology can only enhance, you still need a good base to provide good service. I think that is forgotten sometimes.

I chose question number 2, “What is the Gross Domestic Product per capita of Bahrain?”
