Flickr: A case of study

This is an example of the few cases of study I found about Web 2.0.

Cox, A.M. (2008). Flicr: A case study of Web 2.0. Aslib Proceedings New Information Perspectives, 60(5), 493-516. Retrieved November 13, 2008 from Emerald. This article is available through SJSU King Library.

This paper looks at Flickr from three different perspectives:

1. Analyzing the history, the technical development, and the features of Flickr within the Web2.0 theoretical framework to show whether this site holds any novelty or not.

2. Exploring whether Flickr can be considered a place for the amateur photographer while providing insights into the social features of this social software as well as other related issues. I also found the discussion about idealizing this space as one built by affinity or as a source of cultural activity interesting.

3. Based on original interviews and other sources the author considers optimistic views on Flickr while identifying potential competitors and standards.

According to the author, Flickr is making a social contribution that should be considered as part of a long term process in which “photography has escaped from the camera club with its stuffy and elitist image narrow code derided by art photography and linked to the needs of industry”.
