I attended a Satellite conference by the College of DuPage with Mr. Steven Bell http://stevenbell.info/

The theme of the conference was basic technology adoption strategies for library workers and librarians.

He presented a 5 Point Plan for Tech Adoption:

Encourage Play and Experimentation:

Set the limit: 20% of your work time to dedicate for new technology (example)

Identify Compassionate Pioneers:

Identify a willing, passionate, and sharing person for new technology,

Adopt Reverse Mentoring:

Why do we need this? Experiment with value for users

Get Blended

New skills adapted to assist from outside sources

Create Safe Environment for Change

Management understands and supports technology pioneer’s needs

No evaluation, try new tech. without punishment, more opportunities

At the end of the conference, the viewers send their questions to Steven by e-mail, phone, and fax.

The viewers were concerned with how we cope with the implementation of new technology under this budget crisis. In addition, the other questions were raised by the viewers was how to communication with the IT department regarding the implementation of new technologies.

Great points! I like what Steven said about giving 20% time towards innovation and experimentation. That's what Google does and it's led to some of their most successful projects (gmail, AdWords, etc.). If people are 100% focused on the day-to-day work they have to do, they won't have time to do research, to think about new technologies or projects, and to be innovative.
