Reflections on a wonderful experience
This course exceeded my expectations on every level, and I am so happy to have been a part of it. I have learned so much! Reflecting on the experience has made me realize just how much information I have absorbed over the past few weeks. I could go on and on, but it wouldn't be very structured, so here are my answers to the questions posed by the 5weeks creators:
Favorite Experiences:
- Webcasts (once I got all the technology glitches worked out on my old computer - easy solution was to just buy a new one!). I particularly enjoyed the webcast on flickr given by Steve and Michael - they were so much fun!
- Weekly online chats - I really got used to the dynamic of online chatting (which I had never done before) and learned what it takes to communicate effectively in that medium.
- Variety of sources of information - podcasts, online readings, screencasts - all were effective in their own ways and got me used to using them.
- Reading other peoples blogs and profiles and meeting such great people!
- Looking at the other 5weeks members Flickr photos
Technology most useful to me:
Personally and profesionally, learning about RSS and all its possibilities was the most useful for me. Profesionally it was definitely wikis!
Unexpected outcomes from the program:
One thing that really surprised me while taking this course was the massive amount of information I absorbed and an unexpected outcome of this is that I can finally see that possibilites of all these new technologies and how they relate to libraries. I wasn't sure how flickr and second life could help libraries out, but they do! And I am surprised now at how at home I feel with all the new vocabulary I learned in this class - now I am the librarian who all the other librarians are asking to explain new technologies - never thought that I would be that person!
Improvements to the course:
This course was designed exceptionally well - it is an amazing achievement. Every aspect of it was easy to use and the facilitators were always available for help. I can't say that I can think of any way to improve upon it... it was great!
