My Final Proposal - Summer Reading Blog
Name of Technology and Explanation:
I would like to implement a blog or weblog. A blog or weblog s a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. (taken from wikipedia)
Explanation of this service and how it will fit into our library system:
I work for the Southwest Kansas Library. We serve several public and school libraries in the SW Kansas area. Our patrons are actually staff members at these libraries. Every summer most of our public libraries participate in Summer Reading programs. This is the busiest time throughout the year for most of our libraries. Our libraries are very good at sharing ideas with one another, usually this is done through our email list. I think a blog would be perfect for this idea sharing. Libraries wouldn't have to send or save emails, instead they could just go to our blog and share their ideas or see what other libraries have shared. This would be a service to our libraries and help out our staff quite a bit, too.
Evidence that this technology could be useful or has been useful:
- Kansas Reads to Preschoolers - 2006 was the 2nd year of the Kansas one-book, one-state program for preschoolers which is a project of the Kansas State Library. During a week in November libraries across Kansas have special programs to celebrate the book that is selected. This blog was created through the Kansas Libraries on the Web project to help libraries share their ideas. Libraries posted lesson plans, project ideas, pictures through flickr, songs, etc.
- North Texas Regional Library System Blog - Consultants from this system post ideas and happenings for librarians in their system.
I had problems finding other relevant sites. I am hoping to add more later when I have some more time to look this week... :)
Possible Roadblocks:
- Not having enough staff time or personnel to keep up the blog.
- Getting libraries to post on the blog.
- Getting the word out.
- Training for those that haven't blogged much.
Roadblock Solutions:
- Getting libraries from our system to help oversee the blog.
- Letting libraries post files, posts, etc at their own will. Keeping the blog open for the most part for anyone that is a registered user.
- Talk to a few select libraries and have them "seed" the blog with their ideas to get others over the fear of being the first one to post.
- Get the blog started so there is something to show at the March 20 Summer Reading System workshop.
- Talk about the blog at board meetings.
- Put a link on our main webpage.
- Send out an email on the list.
- Have a short informal training on blogging on the site. Have each participant post a Summer Reading Idea.
Software Solution for the blog:
- I think WordPress would be a good choice for this blog. Through the Kansas Libraries on the Web project we could have the site hosted for us for free.
- Several of our libraries have also already had experience with WordPress and I think they would feel comfortable with the format.
- This would also be a good way for our lbraries to see blogging and WordPress in action so hopefully they will implement a blog or use WordPress in the library.
- It will also give me and the rest of the System staff more hands-on "real" experience with blogging and the software which will in turn benefit our libraries if they get stuck or have a problem.

Janelle - What a great idea!
Janelle - What a great idea! Summer reading programs are always so important and get the community involved with the library. Having that blog would open up a whole other channel of communication. Individuals would be able to read about new books and topics and they would also be able to post their own ideas and comments. Plus, the whole state would be able to work together and provide the same type of information. I think your blog will be fantastic. And once the fear of the technology is worked through (it sounds like you've got a great plan to get past this), the blog will be a success.
Thank you Karen. I hope
Thank you Karen. I hope our libraries like it, too. I have mentioned it to a few of them during training classes and so far they seem excited!
I am hoping it saves them a lot of time during Summer Reading when time is soo sooo valuable.

Janelle - Awesome Idea!
I can totally see your proposal implementation being a vital tool used for Summer Reading programs. Your final project made ideas buzz in head. Upper Hudson Library System (which our library is apart of) will be hosting a community-wide Big Read during the month of May to commemorate Zora Neale Hurston's book Their Eyes Were Watching God. Your idea made a light spark: Why not create a blog to promote this project! It would be a great tool for idea sharing, post film showings, book reviews and book discussions, theatrical readings and exhibits highlighting the works of the Harlem Renaissance. The blog could advertise the celebration events (celebrate Harlem in film, music and art by hosting performances and speakers, such as Pulitzer-prize winner William Kennedy. The Big Read will culminate with a Harlem Renaissance Tour hosted by the Harlem Heritage Tourism & Cultural Center.) Since this is a community-wide library event, using a blog and other social software tools create a strong bridge between web 2.0 and the library.
Thanks for sharing! :)
Isn't it awesome how other
Isn't it awesome how other people's final project ideas have prompted other ideas to be created?! I have thought of lots of those myself from reading other people's projects. Your Big Read Project sounds very similar to our Kansas Reads project. The blog worked well for that. As you saw they also shared photos on Flikr, shared del.icio.us links, etc... When I get the blog up and running I will be sure to post a link to it. It's always nice to see what others are doing... :)
A Harlem Renaissance Tour sounds fantastic! WOW!!
Janelle, A Summer Reading
Janelle,
A Summer Reading Blog sounds stupendous. Blogging is fun and informative and is a wonderful way to introduce staff to one of the social software tools. It should strengthen the online community between public and school librarians which may bear good fruit in coming years. You have a wealth of ideas to launch the project! Using WordPress will provide you more time to explore the blog software you are coming to know and love as we have been using it all along in 5Weeks. The creative writer and reader will soon be unleashed among Kansas librarians this summer. Anticipation!
Thank you Beth! I am
Thank you Beth! I am really hoping this gets them into blogging. A lot of libraries are very anti-blog so I am hoping this gets them away from it somewhat. I didn't think of this being a way for our school libraries and public libraries to collaborate. Good idea! They are usually so seperate from each other. :) This will help them hopefully bond in some way.

Janelle,
This sounds like a great idea and using the summer reading will work best. Good luck with this. It was a pleasure working with you.

This is an excellent
This is an excellent proposal, Janelle! You did good! I can see how it will make a big impact... so much better to blog than e-mail. All the stuff you will need will be right there in place and much harder to miss when you get busy with summer reading. Best of luck!
