Final Project - Blogging the Book Club
Intro: I am the sponsor for a student book club at UHS. Participants in the book club have repeatedly expressed a desire to have a place online where members could interact and post comments relating to the book we are reading at any given time.
I have used the Google-owned blogging service Blogger to create a blog for the book club at my high school. The UHS book club blog can be viewed by clicking here. It is linked on the web site for the book club is on the web site for my library.
School officials, including me, want to be sure that student security is maintained, therefore only registered users will be able to post comments on the blog. Each user will be reminded to give out NO identifying personal information on the blog. Currently, the security on the blog is such that only registered users may post comments, though anyone may read the blog. This should provide a level of transparency (any parent, administrator, etc. can see what is being posted) along with the safety of preventing strangers from interacting with the blog. Another option would be for me to enable comment moderation--where I would have authority to check posts before publishing them.
At the next meeting of the book club, I will discuss the blog with club members. We will discuss security concerns of the district. I will check with members how they feel about registering to post comments.
I want to get this project up and running and figure out the kinks and then present it to my administrator who will have final authority on whether it will continue or not. I foresee that the security concerns will be the primary issue and so I want to have these working as smoothly as possible before continuing.
Once members get going, maintenance will require me to consider tweaking security issues--registered commenting, moderated comments, open v.closed public display, etc.

Matthew - I think a book
Matthew - I think a book club blog is a great idea. I love the way yours looks visually and I think it is great to give students a venue where they can post their thoughts or ask questions online. Writing online may give them a chance to be more eloquent or detailed than they may be in the book club meetings - and as we have learned in this class the generation that is in high school right now is definitely comfortable being online!

Matthew, All of these book
Matthew,
All of these book clubs and book club blogs are almost making me wish I could go back to high school. I would have LOVED being able to express myself this way so much. I think this a great thing for them. I hope it goes over well.
I like your idea of getting it up and running and getting the kinks worked out before decided whether it will be continued or not.
I like the layout, too! I hope it goes well and the kids enjoy it... :)

Matthew, I think that the reading blog is a great idea. It sounds like you have all the bases covered concerning security and anomyous comments. Good luck with this. It was great working with you.

Matthew, You are an
Matthew,
You are an inspiration to me! After hearing you discuss it in our group, I looked up some others on line, and as you know, I started a blog for our senior high English classes. Keep in touch and let me know how your's is going, and I'll let you know about mine too.
It's been great being in your group. Thanks for being there!

Matthew, eventually I would
Matthew, eventually I would like to start a blog for students but at the elementary level, it would probably be more like book reviews. I was interested to read about your security concerns. I'm afraid that is what is going to kill any ideas I have about students posting online. Jini
