feelings on flickring
i'd probably be more excited about flickr if i wasn't having such a hard time uploading my photos to it. still, i can see why it's so appealing. i use it more than google images now, depending on what i'm looking for, image-wise. the social tagging feature, the communication it can facilitate, all of that makes sense. but mostly on a detached, intellectual level. i like the idea that flickr could provide a virtual tour of a library for distance students, (but then again, why would distance students care about how the library looks?), or giving a "face" to the library (staff, users, etc). but most of the ideas for its use still seem like frills....maybe this is because i feel like there are really basic services at my library i'm working to address. i feel like flickr use would be way down the list...

I think you may be surprised
I think you may be surprised about what distance students care about in terms of the physical presence of the library. In surveys, one of the biggest draws of Norwich to our distance learners is that it is a real campus with a real physical library (as opposed to something like University of Phoenix). They are inundated throughout their program with pictures of the library (and other parts of campus), so much so that they feel a real part of the campus community. They like to feel that connection and have said so time and again in surveys. I am really impressed with how our online programs really do make that effort, so I do think a virtual tour of the library would be great for distance learners.
