flickr for training

As a trainer, I found Lauren Pressley's presentation about using flickr for training very interesting. In my experience, most people prefer visual learning. Flickr seems like a fast and easy way to provide visuals to go with text-based training materials, and can be accessed anywhere. I might use flickr in this way, but in my division, we are considering going straight to screencasts, which provide the kind of multi-media experience we think might be very effective for our users/learners.
I was very impressed with the GMT wiki handbook - now there's an application!

Lauren, I completely agree
Lauren, I completely agree with you that Flickr is a wonderful tool for training. But I would like to add that I feel it’s a wonderful tool if you have student workers to train. We are actually going down a similar route with creating screencasts (using Camtasia Studio) at the Historical Society as a demonstration tool. We feel that screencasts would be a more effective tool in training patrons on how to search our catalog rather than Flickr.
Thanks for the feedback! I
Thanks for the feedback! I just wanted to add that I'm using screencasts for some purposes, too. There are cases where nothing beats them. For my population, I found that the Flickr training method works for certain types of problems and situations, and it's nice that it's absolutely silent so it won't bother patrons when students are using a tutorial.
I've posted a few (silent) videos to YouTube for my students, too, when it's more useful to demo a step-by-step process.

Lauren's presentation was fascinating for me because it is an interactive way for individuals to learn something new or to troubleshoot a problem. I'm wondering if the same thing can be done an institutional website instead of Flickr. Perhaps, though, that would take a lot more time and man-power.
Well, you could certainly
Well, you could certainly display the photos from Flickr on an institutional Website, but there's nothing like that Flickr interface for ease of use. :)
