Greeter Training and Flickr
This week’s activities sparked an interesting idea of how to use Flickr for training purposes. We are in the process of implementing a “Library Greeter” program at our public library. The first step of implementation was to conduct a survey – this survey was used to gauge areas where staff may need training in order to feel comfortable in this new position. We have yet to move into the phase of conducting training sessions in the areas that resulted in needing assistance.
Some things the survey revealed and how Flickr can help answer questions:
-
How do I work the Self Check Out machine (take step by steps photos of this process checking out various materials)
-
Where is the nearest photocopier? How do I work them?
-
Where is PTS located? - Parent Teacher Section (create a photo map of the library layout using Flickr)
It would be great to implement these photos in a “ Library Greeter Training Wiki” that is composed of the greeter training manual, greeter survey, FAQ’s, Flickr photos, helpful tips on how to be a great greeter, staff could add patron questions that arise that may help other greeters, etc. I think using Flickr could be an innovative way to get this project underway.

I love it! I think that
I love it! I think that this is an excellent application of Flickr as a training tool (as well as a wiki manual)!
I like this idea, too. I did
I like this idea, too. I did such a library tour/map long before flickr with image maps and the like, and it was a bit of a pain, and very difficult to update.
I really liked Lauren Pressley's presentation on using flickr for training. I don't recall if she uses this particular technique or not, but I was thinking for a library tour, you could have a wide-angle "establishing" shot of a room, and then add notes that have links to detailed photos.
As an example, I just added a note to this photo of Tutt Library in our photo group. If you mouse over the statue in the foreground, you'll get the note with links to two other photos in our photostream.
To do something like that, you just need to know basic HTML for creating links.
I love the idea of creating
I love the idea of creating an image map with applied notes linking to specific details. If simple things change you could just edit your notes. This also helps since we found out some evening/part-time staff indicated on the survey that they are not sure where to find specific things in the library. During greeter training sessions staff could take a look at the interactive library tour photo maps and maybe the note fields could have questions with a link to the answer. This would link to other photos in our photostream. We could also use the Flickr discussion forum to post training questions.
Great ideas on using flickr
Great ideas on using flickr as a training tool. We are working on a wiki for use training staff in our large library consortium, and I'm really excited about how it is beginning to shape up! But going beyond that, I think using and integrating Flickr with this is a great idea I just might have to mull over... :)
