wiki problems

I have to admit I am at a loss as to how I could use Wikis in an elementary school setting. I was trying to think about a way to use it with students but I’m worried about security issues and I know my tech people would be, too. Then I tried to think of a way to use it with my staff  but some of them still won’t access their email. My fellow librarians? A possibility but we already use something called an Eboard to collaborate online.

If and when I do set up a wiki, I think I would use PB Wiki, if for no other reason than I really like peanut butter. Only kidding. It looks very simple to use and for what I want to do, I need simple. My school library subscribes to quite a few online databases. One year I had groups of kids explore them and then make a power point and “teach” the rest of the class how to use it. Instead of a PowerPoint, perhaps they could use a wiki. Or, the librarians in my district are working on new policy statements. Perhaps I could convince a few of them to use a wiki and then drag the rest along. Hmmmmm….

I’ve also been thinking about the best time to use a wiki and the best time to use a blog. Could someone tell me the what they think the best uses of both to be?

I don't know if you've seen

I don't know if you've seen this yet, but this wiki has kids short book reviews that would work terrifically with elementary students..

Think about your needs, and

Think about your needs, and then think about what the software does. That will usually get you to the right piece of software.

  • Should more than one person be able to create or edit any given page? (Yes, wiki. No, blog.)
  • Is it important that the most recent additions be at the top of the main page? (Yes, blog. No, wiki.)
  • Do you want a clear separation between page "owners" and page "commenters"? (Yes, blog. No, wiki.)
  • Do you want RSS feeds for posts and comments? (Yes, blog. No, wiki -- remember that wiki RSS feeds are for changes.)
  • Do you want to incorporate RSS feeds from elsewhere on your page? (Yes, blog. No, wiki -- remember that some wiki software makes the Javascript RSS inclusion tools impossible to use.)
  • Do you want the ability to reorganize your pages flexibly at any time? (Yes, wiki. No, blog. Remember that blogs have only two basic modes of organization: reverse-chronological and by category.)

RSS feeds in wiki: I was

RSS feeds in wiki: I was just working on this. In developing my ideas, I found that in the wiki I'm using, wikispaces.com, allows rss feeds rather easily using this code: [[rss url="put the rss url here"]] along with some other options like title, date, number, size. I'm working on using delicious tags to organize web resources by content area, then putting the feeds into pages of the wiki. It seems to work fine, although they hold changes in the feeds for an hour before updating.
