Concern about social bookmarking?

On a personal note, I love the idea of delicious for keeping up with websites for reserach projects. I do a lot of research for writing projects and have found it difficult to organize the material and sites I find. I might be a little concerned, though, if I were researching a dissertation, for example, that delicious might go bankrupt or sell out or crash--and there would go my research. Maybe this is a little far-fetched if it's a fairly big concern like delicious. Then again, life's uncertain. I guess I'm used to thinking of how to back up everything! Any thoughts?

Extremely valid concern, and
Extremely valid concern, and definitely something to keep in mind: "can I get my data out of this thing?"
In the case of del.icio.us, hit the "settings" link, and you'll see an "export/backup" option in the second column of links. This will give you an HTML representation of all your bookmarked URLs, including (if you wish) tags and notes.

Robin, you do make a very good point. While this may not be a significant concern with del.icio.us (since it is owned by Yahoo!), it is a good idea to consider the viability of any social software service when deciding which one to use. About 18 months ago, I switched from del.icio.us to Blinklist (moving my bookmarks over) and became disappointed later on by service outages. So I recently exported my bookmarks and imported them into del.icio.us. The beauty of del.icio.us is that you can actually export your bookmarks to a standard format that will allow you to import them into another tool. It also provides you with a backup of everything you bookmarked that you can store locally. When logged in, click on settings and then look for export / backup.
Great advice, as usual!
