Late...like the snow this year
Hello to all of you. My name is Sandra and I'm a late addition to the 5 Weeks course. I'm really looking forward to it and you'll have to pardon the fact that I'm a little behind the rest of you. This is the first time I have posted to a public space...well outside of joining the SocialLibrariesLurkers wiki a few weeks ago. I am a recent graduate of the MLIS program and still hunting for my first full-time job but work Sunday Services at Toronto Public Library. Most of the users we see on Sundays are students. I'm in two different branches, one seems to attract mainly high school students while the other attracts students who are avoiding the very large and, I'm guessing, intimidating library at their nearby university. I hope to land in a university setting, preferably one with an LIS PhD program because someday I intend to go after that degree too!
Like some of the rest of you, I need some structure and direction to tackle anything 'techie' and I'm looking forward to the interesting and varied ways I can use these tools as I jump into Librarianship.
Outside of libraries, I have two twenty-something daughters, a husband and a cat. One of my favorite days of the year is "Talk like a Pirate Day", I'm interested in anything to do with literacy and in pursuing that interest have done some one-to-one tutoring, attempted to learn braille, was temporarily blinded by the idea of 'numerical/statistical literacy' (the problem is that I can't even balance my online chequing account), thought about literacy through video gaming (but only if I'm successful at this level) and otherwise spend a lot of time thinking about ways to make self-education and lifelong learning matter to the people I encounter.
Full speed ahead...well after a good night's sleep if this post works.
