Blogs as Research Tools

I am having trouble finding blogs that document student research projects. (The idea to have students post topics, resources, informal writing, etc. was listed in one of the articles.)

I was hoping that someone out there might have some knowledge of a project that has done this. Obviously I am using the wrong key words, because I keep getting articles rather than the real deal!

Thanks!

Might this be an example of

Might this be an example of the sort of thing you're looking for?

This blog was created by a group working on a project for an MLIS course.

I'm not 100% sure you'll

I'm not 100% sure you'll find what you want here, but Weblogged has a bunch of links to blogs in the classroom setting. Don't miss the major list of classroom Weblogs.

Here is an interesting class on gaming where the students presented their research on blogs.

There are a lot of great blogs by educators about blogging in the classroom (for example, Weblogged, 2 Cents Worth, The Open Classroom, Moving at the Speed of Creativity, Infomancy and Blue Skunk Blog). I bet those would be excellent places to start looking.

Though I write about schools

Though I write about schools and school libraries on Infomancy, I am an administrator and not a school librarian. You might check out Wanderings... by Jacquie Henry. Also, there has been a wonderful continuation of research glimpses happening on one of my posts at Infomancy on MySpace.

The blogs for this purpose

The blogs for this purpose at my school are restricted to student access only. This may be the case for most such blogs because of privacy issues, but that's just a guess.

Best,
Iris

Hi Tamara - not sure if this

Hi Tamara - not sure if this is what you had in mind but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I taught an LIS course on social software last Fall and all my students had to document their learning process on blogs. The course blog is at http://www.mlis757.blogwithoutalibrary.net and links to the course blogs can be found in the sidebar.

I must admit--the journal

I must admit--the journal format of blogs really throws me when I'm trying to locate specific information. The tagging doesn't seem to help either. I guess I'm not used to the kinds of information I can expect to find in a blog.

I'd like to get students using delicious and tagging resources. What I'm thinking of implementing is a blog that documents student's research process:

· An initial entry that discusses general research interests.

· A statement and refinement of the research question.

· A preliminary research strategy. What types of primary and secondary sources will be necessary?

· Notes on sources, including proper documentation and quotations.

· Observations, general (what themes and ideas are emerging from your research?).

· Free writing. Discovering the focus of the research through informal synthesis and analysis.

· Formal writing. If the research project must result in an essay, use the blog to post early drafts and to solicit feedback from classmates.

Thanks for all your suggestions! And, I would welcome any more thoughts. I still haven't found any examples. I would guess that most schools would post this on their intranet which may not be accessible to search engines.
