My Reflection

The last few weeks have been amazing. I have learned so much from all of the presenters as well as my fellow students. The reading assignments have been very helpful as well. I am going to start with using a blog for my teen customers. I already have a member of my TIB to help with the designing and organizing this blog. We will use it as part of our summer reading program. The kids can post book reviews or just discuss what they are reading. I will also have give aways for those that participate just as an incentive. I am looking forward to implementing this project.

I am also using my new skills to write a lesson plan for my library school assignment.

Proposal

West Deptford Free Public LibraryReading Rocks Book Club 1.      Blogging technology is available to anyone using a computer with Internet connection. This technology is available at our library as well as the neighboring school and many of our residents.2.      The Teen Blogging Book Club would give teens the opportunity to read book reviews posted by the young adult librarian as well as peers.

wikis

This the first time I have every thought of reading a wiki for anything other than an encyclopedia entry. I liked the wiki for Library's Best Practices. It has many tutorials to help with everything from collection development to book talks and YA programming. I was very informative. One question that I will ask tomorrow night when we have our chat is how can you be sure that the information on a wiki is current or correct informaiton when anyone can edit it?

RSS in the library

After reading the basic rss articles and listening to the web cast last night, I have been thinking how to use this. I can see that rss is a great way to keep connected with the news and blogs of interest. It was mentioned last night that having rss feed on the library's web site could help customers keep on top of current events. I think that I need to think about this more.

I was able to create an account in google reader and it was very easy to use.

Chapter 1 Blogs

Week one went very well. I was able to post a little blog using word press. It was easy to use and I can see where it would be very helpful using it with my young adults. It was also interesting to read the different between a blog and a wiki. I can see where a wiki would work to post the programs that are on the web page. I haven't tried a wiki yet though. Also, I got the chance to use IM. I never used it before and I was in a panic. Dorothea thanks for your help. I am now able at least to work on one computer.

Hi Everyone

I am currently the Young Adult specialist at West Deptford Library in New Jersey. I am also a graduate student at
Rutgers University in their online studies in library science. I have a little experience with blogging through workshops and such. I am really looking forward to getting a lot of hands on experience with using the technologies so I can keep up with my students. I always feel that I am playing catch up.
